First work experience in Australia

It was really amazing to get my first relevant work experience in Melbourne. With the helping of AMES (Adult Multicultural Education Services), I finished my two week practical placement at the Chinese Museum of Melbourne.

The Chinese Museum is a not-for-profit incorporated association located in the heart of Melbourne's Chinatown. As one of the most famous Chinese Museums in the world outside China, it plays an important role in research, conservation and promotion of the contribution of the Chinese community which was made during the development of Australia.

During this practical placement, my principal duty was to complete a proposal of the Chinese Museum website update. My suggestion was to create a virtual museum in the panorama system, which would attract more and different kinds of visitors to be interested in the Chinese Museum of Melbourne. Considering the placement timeframe, I was only allowed to build a scaffold of an interactive website with ground floor virtual visit.

Three station panorama scenes placed on the ground floor where the principal objects and collections in the 360° view can be filed. One of them will be placed in the front waiting area next to the reception, and the other two will be placed in the Dragon Gallery which can show maximum collections in that area. These stations all connected and provide a virtual interactive visit by changing the point of view between these stations.

The most difficult part in this practical placement was the treatment of the digital panorama picture. Compare with previous projects, I haven’t had any professional equipment such as special tripod and panoramic head this time. So it took me a lot of time to calibrate the digital photos and optimise the final result.

Finally, with this great successful provisional prototype, I am really thankful to Ms. Beverley Knowles, CEO of the Chinese Museum, Dr Sophie Couchman, Curator of the Chinese Museum and Sharon. They are such kindly to help me and I got a wonderful work experience in Australia from them.

PS: Unfortunately, I haven’t had enough time to finish the 3D reconstruction of the Dragon head by Photo-Modelling. It will certainly be another amazing 3D collection.
